Ilya Pavlov (b. 1982) is a design artist professionaly. His 2005 Ot Pupa (At the Belly Level) is a series of images showing a viewfinder view with another camera. His work is one-step further removed from the object itself, making the camera the object of his perception. This “photograph of a camera’s viewfinder” is an unusual development of the Kharkiv School conceptual art direction.
His Ot Pupa requires the viewer to address the ideation that the camera, the lens, the viewfinder, all remove us from the experience of the actual object. Experience, in this case, is the result of various layers and modifications. Pavlov makes us address the subjectivity of the machine and the machine user. His work asks us to consider " we" are looking at “looking at”. The real camera image after all is a circle.
We welcome your comments. VASA Exhibitions are the result of various curators, artist, and photographers.
