Eugeny Kotlyar (b. 1970) is somewhat distanced from the artistic community, but his The Babylon Rivers 2013 project won him artistic acclaim when it was exhibited in the Kharkiv Art and Design Academy gallery.
The Jewish theme has always been of special interest in Ukraine due to its controversial history and nowadays repercussions. Kotlyar’s black-and-white documentary images portray the life of Jewish community in Ukraine. “This project,” the artist says, “has extended far beyond the Ukrainian borders. I stripped the current exposition of all color. Black and white photos with a light texture and framing a la old photo plates provide the visual effect of pre-war photography and play with the aesthetics of Pictorialism”.
