Girlfriend
“(He) regards reality as the sole enemy and as the source of all suffering, with which it is impossible to live, so that one must break off all relations with it if one is to be in any way happy. The hermit turns his back on the world and will have no truck with it. But one can do more than that; one can try to re-create the world, to build up its stead another world in which its most unbearable features are eliminated and replaced by others that are in conformity with one’s own wishes. Reality is too strong for him. He becomes a madman, who for the most part finds no one to help him in carrying through his delusion. It is asserted, however, that each one of us behaves in some one respect like a paranoiac, corrects some aspects of the world, which is unbearable to him by the construction of a wish and introduces these delusions into reality.“
(Nietzsche)
The series is exploring a couple. The boyfriend moved far away and the only live communication they have is over the Internet and the only material memories of her by him are her possessions that he collected over a period of time.
The series is partly autobiographical and partly fictional for the purpose of exploring the perception of authenticity of photography. The project is dealing with questions of morality, reality, stalking, worshiping and borders between private and public, and love and obsession, from the viewpoint of an ill person who may be diagnosed as a delusional erotomaniac. It deliberately mixes reality and fiction in an attempt to provoke questions about the realness of the whole project; almost every part can be and maybe should be considered not real because of its exaggeration but on the other hand it may be perfectly real.
The series contains predominantly photographs made with a digital camera, however some images are incorporating other Internet based mediums like Skype, snapshots, and other applications. The Internet presents the only available and possible communication between the two.
Therefore, the series is divided into several parts with the purpose of showing different attempts of worshiping, controlling, obsession, pain and breakup.
