Religious paraphernalia like icons bearing images of saints, crucifixes, etc. have become part of everyday environment. One can encounter them in most unexpected places, from Soviet-style apartments to modern interiors or even taxi dashboards. A possible explanation is that their function is to fill the vacuum left after the collapse of prevailing Soviet ideology. Yaroslav Solop’s series of still life images visualizes this phenomenon.
“The Last Haven project explores the question of loneliness and hopelessness, the search for the new meanings in a post-Soviet society where religion has superseded the once overwhelming communist ideology of masses, becoming a phantom hope for serenity and happy future.”
Solop worked on the project for over a year, and in total it includes approximately two hundred photos.
