Catherine Billingsley | Hand Eye Coordination (right hand and eye)

Statement

My “Body of Work” incorporates images from a series of routine medical tests I underwent including eye, mammogram, ultrasound, and bone density tests, and dental, chest, hand, hip, and knee x-rays.   The work in this series was created over a period of six years.

My eye images and dental x-rays are woven of thousands of beads, but the majority of the images I have used have been manipulated in Photoshop and digitally-printed on fabric, then pieced and machine-quilted.  With the exceptions of the skirt and vest in this series, I have done all of my printing on a desktop printer.

I am submitting an image of Hand Eye Coordination (right hand and eye), the piece I feel best represents the series.  The colors in the center eye image are used in the hands as well.  The images are manipulated in Photoshop and digitally-printed on cotton fabric, then pieced and machine-quilted.  I also made a companion piece using the left hand and eye.

I am drawn to the abstract nature of these images or the abstract nature I could create by repeating or manipulating the images whole or in part.  I became aware of the beauty within each of us when I saw the digital image of my eye which was where this series began.  What you see here is the result of my efforts to show the inner me.
