A VASA video series ... Carla Della Beffa

Carla Della Beffa is a video, photo and relational artist. Formerly art director and creative director in international advertising agencies, she has had experiences (and exhibitions) as a painter and a net-artist. After commuting for thirteen years between Milan and Paris, she now lives in Milan but is actively involved in international residencies, exhibitions and festivals.

Since 2011, her artistic research focuses on economy issues and their social impact. She continues to address the relational side of life, gender and age issues.

The video work of Carla Della Beffa will cover four installments –
February, March, April and May 2017.
The video series is archived.

April 2017
(Third of four installments)

I love reading, and many of the books I read suggest to me new research.
I never know what ideas may come out of it. My videos about the themes
of life and love can be inspired by words, and aim to reveal the subtext, or
by what happens around me. As Picasso said, You always paint yourself.

La cérémonie des adieux

2006, video PAL, stereo, 5'00"

Burning the photos of an ex-lover is rather a good way to forget and forgive. Fire purifies... After that, you could be ready to fall in love again.
The title is taken from a text by Simone de Beauvoir, after Jean-Paul Sartre's death.

Lolita

2007, video PAL, stereo, 43"

My homage to Kubrick. And, ironically, to Nabokov's Humbert Humbert and his love for little girls. Contrary to what many believe when thinking of Lolita, this girl was not sexy, did not appreciate, and had to submit because she was helpless.
In this video, I also challenge the diffused idea that desire is limited to youth, especially when referred to women. Sexuality is an essential part of every individual.

Rituali

2007, video PAL, stereo, 2'20"

Two daily rituals with very deep roots, bread and wine are one fundamental link between different cultures. The video concept was born out of a series of performances: at the time I was focusing on food culture, and particularly on the travels of food, from pre-history and mainly central Asia through centuries and continents.

Expatriate

2005, video PAL, stereo, 2'50"

I was in France, in a group, and I felt like an outsider. Not so much though, since I could ask them to cooperate for this video, aiming to show how expatriates can feel in their new country: isolated even among friends.
