Wim De Schamphelaere:
Fascinated by people, Wim worked mainly on the African continent the last 10 years. By being focused on the same remote villages, he gradually gained their trust and mutual respect. Over time the villagers admitted him into their daily life, and accepted the way he wanted to photograph them.
Taking it slow to win the villager’s trust enabled its members to participate and feel a sense of accomplishment in creating something magical and spectacular for and about the community. Hundreds of single shots were stitched into one very-detailed large-scale image (10 to 20 feet in length).
As collectors search prestigious galleries throughout Europe, they are finding Wim's imagery transcending traditional documentary photographs to something much more. Wim De Schamphelaere modestly explains: “I’m just using current photographic technology to reproduce life and its reality in a way that was impossible in the past.” Wim returns to the villages and gives his participants a piece of their village portraits.
