VASA
Affiliate: A global
network of visual
arts organizations
I am Roberto
Muffoletto,
director of the
VASA Project.
I hold a MFA in
Visual Studies
from the Visual
Studies Workshop-Rochester/SUNY-Buffalo,
and a Ph.D. in
Educational Technology
from the University
of Wisconsin-Madison.
I am the founder
of CEPA Gallery
in Buffalo, New
York (http://cepagallery.org/),
and have served
as a journal editor
for Camera Lucida
and Frame|Work,
a publication
based at the Los
Angeles Center
for Photographic
Studies. Over
the last 17 years
I have designed
and directed an
international
online graduate
degree program
in New Media and
Global Education
(Appalachian State
University http://edtech.ced.appstate.edu),
and collectively
built and directed
a community electronic
village in Cedar
Falls, Iowa (http://cedarnet.org/).
The VASA Project
is a combination
of my work and
interest in visual
studies with the
potential of the
emerging digital
media and global
social networking.
I would like
to introduce you
to the VASA Project
and how to become
an Affiliate member.
The VASA Project
and Affiliates
The
VASA Project is designed as
a global learning
environment focused
on photography,
digital video,
criticism, visual
studies, new media,
and other emerging
areas, such as
Web 2.0 social
networking environments.
All the VASA Project
workshops are
delivered online
in English, using
open-source and
Internet-based
interactive environments.
The VASA Project
is based upon
the union of two
familiar environments:
the traditional
workshop model
and networked
digital media
technology.
A
VASA Project
Affiliate is
an visual
arts or media
orgranization
that works
with VASA
in offering
online workshops,
gallery talks,
study groups,
and seminars
that enhances
and enriches
the organization's
educational
program to
its community,
as well as
a larger global
community.
There are
five major benefits
to being an
Affiliate organization:
(1) Each affiliate
may schedule
online interactive
"Gallery
Talks",
promoting their
artist and their
organization
at no cost.
(2) Affiliates
may organize
presentations
which promote
their programming
and events at
no cost.
(3) Expanded
educational
and workshop
offerings to
your membership
and community at
no cost or risk.
(4) Revenue
flow from workshops
returning to
your organization
on a per-student
basis.
(5) Being part
of a global
network of Affiliates
using the emerging
communication
and information
technologies
to build and
support learning
communities.
By becoming an
Affiliate of the
VASA Project,
participating
organizations
expand and enhance
their educational
program offerings
to their regional
community at no
cost or risk to
the organization.
As an "Affiliate
Organization"
you are requested
to disseminate
information from
the VASA Project
to your community
(through emails
and web sites)
on "Gallery Talks
and Presentations",
"Workshops", and
other
events. For example
as an affilaite
your "Gallery
Talk" will be
promoted through
all affiliates,
expanding your
audience and promoting
your organization
and artist.
The Workshops:
The VASA Project
covers all workshop
expenses. This
includes the registration
of students, faculty
stipends, server
maintenance and
upgrades, workshop
development, storage
of student portfolios,
administration,
and other costs.
In addition,
for each student
noting an Affiliate
organization when
he or she registers
for a workshop,
that Affiliate
organization will
receive fifty
dollars ($50.00).
In other words,
10 students =
$500, 100 students
= $5000, and so
on.
Currently, the
VASA faculty is
located in various
locals: Finland,
Australia, the
United States,
and the Netherlands.
All workshops
are in English
and online. Using
digital networked
technologies and
social networking
environments,
the VASA Project
is able to link
experts and students
from around the
world, building
a diverse and
dynamic learning
community for
your organization
and community.
In my experience
of directing centers,
all too often
workshops or classes
do not draw enough
students to cover
expenses; there
is interest in
a media workshop,
but the facilities
or resources,
such as labs and
production tools,
do not exist to
support the workshop;
and bringing notable
experts to an
institution is
costly and may
be beyond the
funding available.
The VASA Project,
as a collective
network of art
organizations,
makes this all
possible.
The
VASA Project,
as a global
project, working
in concert with
Affiliates and
individuals
beyond national
and geographic
borders, is
in a position
to offer workshops,
study groups,
and seminars
at no cost to
the Affiliate
organization.
How to become
a VASA Project
Affiliate
There are no
cost or fees
associated with
being an Affiliate
organization.
As an "Affiliate
Organization"
you are requested
to disseminate
information from
the VASA Project
to your community
(through emails
and web sites)
on "Gallery
Talks and Presentations",
"Workshops",
and other events.
For example as
an affilaite your "Gallery
Talk" will
be promoted through
all affiliates,
expanding your
audience and promoting
your organization
and artist.
TheVASA Project
takes care
of the rest:
registrations,
and all expenses
related to the
Workshops, Gallery
Talks, Focus
Groups, or Seminars.
There is no
risk or cost
to the affiliate
organization.

The VASA Project
Workshops
VASA Project
workshops are
NOT self-paced
classes where
students work
through a curriculum
in a controlled,
linear fashion
independent of
other students
and the instructor.
Workshops are
built upon a learning
community concept
where students,
using interactive
and social networking
technologies on
the Internet,
work and learn
together. Students
exchange ideas,
skills, and perceptions,
while concurrently
addressing the
diversity of problem-solving
approaches, thus
expanding everyone's
knowledge and
understanding.
Building community
is the core of
the VASA Project
experience.
Please walk
through VASA
Project Web
site for more
information
about workshop
offerings (goto:workshops)
and to become
acquainted with
faculty members

names.
If you wish to
have a conversation
about the VASA
Project and becoming
an Affiliate,
please email me
at Roberto@vasa-project.com,
and we can schedule
a time to talk.
I look forward
to working with
you.
