Boris Mikhailov

Boris Mikhailov (b. 1938) was one of the founders of the Vremya group in 1971. (See exhibtion 1 and 2 for Mikhailov's 1970 – 1985 and 1985 - 2000 work.)

Mikhailov’s Tea, Coffee, Cappuccino (2000 - 2010) appears to follow his socially critical works of the previous decades: his characters again are low-class drunks, hobos and thugs, his images continue to be desolate city slums and crumbling small towns. But what looks like reportage color photos reveal a novel look on documentary photography.  Seemingly simple straightforward shots taken together become pieces of a greater puzzle presenting a picture of surrealistic preposterity of Ukraine’s provincial reality.
