The above film of the IBGE building in Brazil provides a look into the poverty and life of the occupants. Carrato provides a platform for the voices of those struggling to live a life.

“We don’t want to become a Statistic”
The single paragraph of the Article 6 of the Brazilians Federal Constitution defines as social rights education, healthcare, nutrition, labour, housing, leisure, security, social welfare, maternity and childhood protection, assistance to the unprotected ones.

These rights are denied to the occupants of the IBGE abandoned building, as well as to a significant part of Brazil population. IBGE residents live in improvised shelters, whose rooms are created by wood beams and pieces of curtains, with no electricity or piped water, and where garbage and waste are surrounding them

The occupied ruins are located in the heart of Mangueira, on e of the most famous favelas in Rio de Janeiro, internationally well-known for its long samba tradition. Residents' routine is the explicit denunciation of authorities' negligence, also considering the amount of public resources spent in Maracana stadium - so close but so far at the same time -. Have the investments missed the address by a distance of only 15 minute walk, or have they forgotten the priorities?

In times when the risk of arbitrary removal is imminent, this project, besides being a photo essay and a short documentary, is a complaint. The intention is to gain attention from authorities and public institutions, and it also aims to sensitize and mobilize the public in order to guarantee a proper home for all these families.

O artigo sexto da constituição federal em seu parágrafo único estabelece como direitos sociais a educação, a saúde, a alimentação, o trabalho, a moradia, o lazer, a segurança, a previdência social, a proteção à maternidade e à infância e a assistência aos desamparados.

Os ocupantes do antigo prédio do IBGE, assim como boa parte da população brasileira, estão desamparados em praticamente todos estes direitos, vivem em apartamentos improvisados, divididos por madeiras e cortinas, sem luz ou água encanada, cercados por lixo e dejetos.

As ruínas do complexo ocupado estão localizadas no coração da comunidade da Mangueira, conhecida internacionalmente pela sua tradição no samba. A rotina dos habitantes é a explícita denúncia do descaso das autoridades, principalmente quando em contraste com os recursos públicos empenhados no Maracanã, tão perto e tão longe. Os investimentos erraram de endereço por apenas 15 minutos de caminhada, ou será que esqueceram das prioridades?

Com o risco iminente de remoção, o documentário, além de um filme, é uma denúncia. A intenção é chamar a atenção das autoridades e organizações políticas e também sensibilizar a sociedade para que se mobilizem a garantir uma moradia digna para essas famílias.

VASA Exhibitions over the years have provided a platform for individual and group exhibitions, collaborative exhibitions with various organizations and galleries and exhibitions that follow a particular theme or inquiry such as “Where Do We Go Now” curated by Rui Cepeda and the “Kharkiv School of Photography: Soviet Censorship to New Aesthetics” curated by Igor Manko.

VASA Exhibitions are international and multicultural.  The curatorial team has strived to present work that not only represents the photographers but also the social, historical and cultural.  As an online international project, VASA works to engage various digital tools.  Video, as an example, not only offers the potential for the presentation of works, it provides the opportunity and framework for the voice of the author to be seen and heard.   Through image, text, sound and animation, VASA works to expand the exhibition paradigm and provide a rich experience for the viewer (as well as the author).

VASA Exhibitions provides a viewing and research environment by archiving all of the exhibitions in their entirety. For example, the viewer may view a 2009 exhibition as it was presented and not just traces of its existence.

VASA Exhibitions (a program in VASA) includes images, videos and sound works.
